On August 7, 1933, with the help of Kurdish forces, the Iraqi military butchered Assyrians in Simele and other parts of Iraq. Approximately 3,000 Assyrians died that day.

In August of 1933, Lemkin learned the news of the aforementioned massacre, in which 63 Assyrian villages in the Dohuk and Mosul districts of modern-day Iraq were attacked by the nascent Iraqi Army. As many as 6,000 Assyrians were brutally murdered. Pregnant women were bayoneted, while others were lit aflame with burning Bibles.

The monument commemorates the victims of the Assyrian genocide committed by the Ottoman (Turkish) government during World War One and the Simele Massacre at the hands of the Iraqi army in 1933. The monument has been subjected to vandalism several times since its unveiling. On the monument, the hand represents the people who dedicated their lives to create a better and safer world.
